Adélie Penguin
Pygoscelis adeliae · Bird
The most widespread penguin of the Antarctic, common along the whole coast of the continent, a little over 60 cm tall, black above and white below with a white ring round the eye. It is bold and will challenge animals far bigger than itself. In spring the colonies travel together from the pack ice to ice-free beaches and build rough nests of piled stones; for the dark winter they leave the continent. Leopard seals hunt the adults, and skuas and giant petrels take eggs and chicks.
