A spiral-horned antelope of the deep Sahara, 60 to 125 kg, that wanders in herds of five to twenty led by a male, following the rains across sandy and stony desert and going long spells without drinking. Slow-moving, it is easy to run down, and local people prized its meat and made shoes and sandal soles from its hide; ancient Egyptians even kept it tethered. Hunted almost out of existence, it is critically endangered, with a few hundred at most left wild in Chad, Niger and Mauritania.
