The Metal Encyclopedia gathers 88 metals for the table. Some come from real metallurgy, like wootz, the steel South Indian smiths melted in sealed clay pots. Others come from myth, from the games and books game masters borrow from, and from our own forge. Every real metal cites its sources.
Orichalcum belongs to myth. Plato set it in Atlantis, second only to gold, and clad the walls and pillars of Poseidon's temple in it until they glowed like fire. He gives no recipe. Then ingots came up from an ancient Greek wreck off Gela, and the analysis read copper and zinc. Brass, in other words, which the Romans had been calling aurichalcum all along.
