Hearth

The city your land can feed.

  • Worldbuilding
  • System-agnostic

Hearth is a city builder for worldbuilders and game masters. Pick a place (climate, terrain, water, the rocks underneath) and a size, from a hamlet of a hundred to a city of a million, and Hearth tells you what it takes: how much farmland, how far the carts go, how many villages and farmers around it, the wood it burns, what it makes and what it must buy. The city asked for is always the one described: too large for its land, it is told what it costs, grain by river or by sea, harder lords, a strained countryside.

The sheet reads like a city, in plain words: its area and walls, households and parishes, districts and trades, its market, its bad years, the power that holds it, and what a plague or a famine leaves behind. Eight cultures give it its words, from medieval Europe to Song China and the dwarves. Fantasy has its place: cities carved under the mountain, forges on lava, hot springs, and your own universe of goods, cultures and food crops.

Several cities make a region, with their roads, rivers, realms, tolls and tribute, and an Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator map becomes a region in one import. Every sheet plays its ambiences from the MGS Audio catalogue, copies as text for a wiki or goes to Foundry. Hearth is honest about what it knows: sourced figures and its own estimates are told apart, and the sources are listed in the menu.
