Cinchona Bark

Plant · Uncommon

The bark holds several alkaloids, above all quinine; dried and powdered or steeped in tinctures, it brings down fevers and treats malaria, and it gives tonic water its bitterness. Too much causes ringing ears, sickness and heart trouble. Grown in Asian plantations, it let Europeans push into malarial Africa, say some historians.
