Le Fahlerz riche en argent des mines d’argent de Freiberg, en Saxe, nommé en 1853. Le nom a longtemps servi pour toute tétraédrite riche en argent ; depuis la nomenclature de 2020 du groupe de la tétraédrite, c’est un nom de série, le minéral de Freiberg lui-même étant la kenoargentotétraédrite-(Fe), avec l’argentotétraédrite-(Fe) à ses côtés.
